Emergency plumber Belfast: what to do while you wait for help with a burst pipe or leak
Need an emergency plumber in Belfast? CPL Plumbing covers Belfast and the surrounding areas for burst pipes, leaks, blocked drains and more. Call us any time.

A pipe does not care what time it is
It goes at midnight. It goes on a Sunday. It goes the morning after a hard frost when the temperature finally creeps back above zero and a frozen section of copper suddenly lets go. That is the reality of plumbing emergencies in Belfast, and it is why having a number you can actually ring, at any hour, matters more than anything else.
We are CPL Plumbing, and we cover Belfast and the surrounding areas for emergency plumbing work around the clock, seven days a week. No call centres, no automated messages telling you someone will be in touch during business hours. When something goes wrong with your water, you need a plumber, not a voicemail.
What counts as a plumbing emergency?
People sometimes feel awkward ringing out of hours, as if their problem might not be "bad enough." Here is a straightforward list. If any of these apply, ring us.
- A pipe has burst and water is coming through a ceiling, wall or floor
- You cannot find or turn your stopcock and water is still flowing
- A toilet is overflowing and will not stop
- There is a visible water leak you cannot contain
- A drain is backing up and sewage is at risk of coming into the property
- You have no water at all and suspect a burst on your supply pipe
If you are unsure whether your stopcock is working or even where it is, have a read of our guide on finding your stopcock and shutting off the water fast before anything else. Knowing how to kill the supply in the first sixty seconds can save thousands of pounds in damage.
Belfast housing stock and why emergencies happen here
Belfast's housing is older than most people realise. A huge proportion of the city's homes are Victorian and Edwardian terraces, with pipework that has been patched, extended and bodged over decades. Lead pipes, old iron waste runs, undersized copper joints, compression fittings that were never quite right. Add in the fact that Northern Ireland regularly gets hard frosts between November and March, and you have a recipe for burst pipes.
The problem with older terraced housing is that the pipes are often in exposed positions. Underneath suspended timber floors with no insulation below. Running through unheated outbuildings or along external walls. When the temperature drops overnight and then rises quickly in the morning, that is when things fail. The pipe freezes, the ice expands, and by the time you notice the ceiling is wet the damage is already done.
If you want to understand that cycle better, our article on frozen pipes in Northern Ireland covers how to spot them, how to thaw them safely, and what you can do to stop it happening again.
What we do when we get to you
We deal with the immediate problem first. That means stopping the water, assessing what has failed and making the property safe. We do not rush you through a temporary fix and disappear. If the repair can be done properly on the same visit, we do it. If the situation is more complex, we explain clearly what the next steps are.
The jobs we cover as emergency plumbing include:
- Burst and leaking pipes (including hidden leaks behind walls and under floors)
- Blocked drains and waste pipes
- Toilet faults, including overflows and failed flush mechanisms
- Leaking taps and showers
- Radiator and heating pipework leaks (the wet side only, not gas or boilers)
- Blocked sinks and kitchen waste
One important note on boilers and gas: we work on the wet side of heating systems, meaning radiators, pipework, valves and the like. We do not carry out gas work. If your boiler itself has failed, that needs a Gas Safe registered engineer. We will tell you that honestly rather than take on work we should not.
Landlords and letting agents: this matters to you specifically
If you manage rental properties in Belfast or the surrounding areas, a plumbing emergency is not just inconvenient. It is a legal and reputational issue. A tenant ringing you at 11pm about water coming through the ceiling needs an answer, not a promise that someone will be in touch tomorrow.
We work with landlords who need a reliable number they can pass on, or who want to hand us a job directly. We go out, we sort the problem, we let you know what was done. No drama.
Before we arrive: what you can do right now
Getting the water off is the single most useful thing you can do while you wait. Find your internal stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink, in a downstairs cupboard or near the front door in older Belfast terraces) and turn it clockwise until it stops. This cuts the supply to the whole house.
If the leak is coming from a specific radiator or a tap, there may be an isolating valve you can close without shutting off the whole house. But if you are not sure, go for the main stopcock.
If water has come through a ceiling, do not use any electrical switches or sockets in that area until you are certain the water has not reached any wiring. If there is any doubt, turn the relevant circuit off at the consumer unit.
Then ring us.
Blocked drains: not always an emergency, but sometimes it is
A slow drain is an inconvenience. A drain that is backing up completely and threatening to overflow into the house is an emergency. Belfast's older clay drainage systems, combined with the volume of rainfall we get through autumn and winter, mean blockages are common. Leaves, fat build-up, root ingress and collapsed sections all feature.
If you have had heavy rain and your drain has suddenly blocked, it is worth reading our article on blocked drains after heavy rain in Belfast to understand whether the problem is your own pipework or something further down the system that involves NI Water.
How to judge whether a plumber is worth calling
This is a fair question and one people ask when they are searching in a hurry. A few things to check:
- Do they answer the phone, or do you get a voicemail and a callback promise?
- Are they clear about what they cover and what they do not?
- Do they explain the problem to you rather than just handing you a bill?
- Are they honest when a job is outside their scope?
We cannot tell you we are the best in Belfast. What we can tell you is what we do: we turn up, we explain what we find, and we do the work. If something is outside what we should be touching (gas work being the obvious example), we tell you that upfront. Frequently asked questions
What counts as a plumbing emergency and should I call out of hours? If water is actively flowing where it should not be, a drain is backing up into the property, a toilet is overflowing, or you cannot stop a leak, that is an emergency. Do not wait until morning. The longer water sits in a ceiling or wall, the worse the damage. Ring us and we will tell you honestly whether it needs an immediate call-out or whether it can safely wait.
I cannot find my stopcock. What do I do? In most Belfast terraces and semis, the internal stopcock is under the kitchen sink or in a cupboard near the front door. If it is not there, check under the stairs or in a utility room. There is also an external stopcock in the pavement outside, but you need a special key to operate that one. NI Water can assist with the external supply if needed. Our full guide to finding your stopcock walks you through it step by step.
Do you cover gas boiler repairs as part of an emergency call-out? No. We work on the wet side of heating systems: radiators, pipework, valves and connections. Boiler faults and anything involving the gas supply must be handled by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If you ring us and it turns out to be a boiler issue, we will tell you that straight away rather than waste your time.
How do I find a reliable emergency plumber in Belfast when I need one fast? The most useful things to check quickly: do they answer the phone directly, do they state clearly what they cover, and are they based in Belfast rather than operating through a national call-handling service? A local plumber who picks up and can be with you quickly is worth more in an emergency than a polished website that routes you through a booking system. Save our number before you need it.
